Los Angeles County made it official on September 15 that a five-story, 60-unit apartment building is coming to 7914 Broadway Avenue in West Whittier-Los Nietos. The building is being built eight feet taller than the county's own planning commission said it should be.

The commission didn't get to weigh in until last October. When commissioners finally reviewed the project, they heard concerns from residents about traffic and safety, and in response told the developer to shrink the building from almost 70 feet down to about 62, and to raise the number of affordable units from seven to 12. The developer agreed to both.

Then, in March, the project went to the Board of Supervisors for final sign-off. Fourth District Supervisor Janice Hahn, who represents the area, asked to put the height back to 70 feet.
