Man Sentenced for Stealing Identity of Teen Buried at Rose Hills in Whittier
The case was tried in Idaho, but the trail leads back to a grave at Rose Hills, where the real Obregon has rested since 1977.
A federal judge sentenced an unidentified man to five years in prison in August for a 25-year fraud built on a dead teenager's name. The teenager, Carlos Ramon Obregon, was 14 when he was killed in a 1977 drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. He's buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.
For a quarter-century, the man used Obregon's Social Security number and birth certificate to collect nearly $284,000 in benefits meant for people who are elderly, disabled, or living on very little. Investigators still don't know who he really is.
